In Memory |
Martin started at Stockport Grammar Junior School in 1956 and moved into the Senior School in 1962. He was in Arden House and played Lacrosse for both his house and the School. His favourite sport, however, was Football and he would spend most lunchtimes playing in the large playground with goal posts chalked on the walls.
He became an enthusiastic member of the School’s Sailing Club and each Whitsuntide, he would be among the party heading south to Salcombe for a week’s Dinghy Sailing with the Island Cruising Club. In his early teens, he joined Bramhall Park Golf Club, of which his mother, father and grandfather had all been members.
He left SGS in 1969 to begin a management training scheme with Henry Simon’s in Cheadle. He joined the Personnel Department and in addition to professional Personnel Institute qualifications, he gained an HND in Business Studies and eventually became Director of Human Resources. After working at Henry Simon, Martin continued his career in HR at Thames Water Products, ERF and MAN. In 1973, he married Joan and over the years had three children.
He continued his connection with school and in 1989 he became President of the Old Stopfordians’ Association – just as his brother and father had been too.
Sport continued to be a major part of Martin’s life and he continued to play Football but now with the Old Stops Football Team. In 2002, he became the Captain of his Golf Club, followed by his appointment as President in 2015.
Sadly, in 2010 Joan died but a couple of years later, Martin remarried and a new phase of his life began when he moved to Staffordshire with Caroline.
In 2012, he was diagnosed with Intestinal Cancer and underwent several operations. He decided it was time to retire and spend time seeing the world and for several years, he and Caroline travelled extensively. He maintained interest in local affairs too, and was the Chair of Governors at two local primary schools.
A lifelong supporter of Manchester United and Stockport County, he continued to regularly travel up to Edgeley Park with Caroline to watch their home games and did so until a few weeks before he died.
He died on Saturday 29 March 2025 and leaves his wife Caroline, daughters Helen and Vicky, son Adam and grandchildren Rachel and Jack.
