Aimee’s stunning creation was developed in response to the design context ‘Cultural Identity’, and she focussed on the African culture whilst researching pattern and surface decoration techniques. She also worked from a photograph and vectorised the image.
To create her entry, Aimee layered appliqué pieces for the skin and facial features, developed her own four-layered screen print, and then appliquéd this on for the hair wrap, along with sections of denim. The background is Batik and quilted.
After crowning her as the runner up, one of the judges commented: “Such a beautiful piece, the appliqué works wonderfully and the difference between subject and background colours is perfect. I love the use of bold colour and shape for cultural heritage and identity. A great deal of thought, skill and technique has been employed.
“This is a powerful and beautifully resolved exploration of cultural identity, underpinned by strong technical skill and a confident use of colour and pattern. The digital vector work and layered appliqué create real depth and precision, while the bespoke screen-printed headwrap adds a personal and cultural richness.
“The quilted batik background provides a striking contrast, enhancing the portrait’s presence. A highly accomplished and visually arresting piece that shows maturity in both concept and execution, really impressive work.”
Textiles Teacher Mrs Katy Gate added: “It is so rewarding to see Aimee’s beautiful work both recognised and celebrated outside of the Textiles classroom. We are all so proud of Aimee and in awe of the hard work and attention to detail that went into creating such an amazing piece of Textiles Art. A very well-deserved award.”
Aimee is currently studying Fine Art at Nottingham Trent University, and we can’t wait to see where her creativity takes her!
