We are delighted to announce that Stockport Grammar School has received the highest possible rating from the Arts Council England, with a Platinum Artsmark Award.
By awarding Platinum, a level held by only a small number of schools in the country, the Arts Council has recognised the exceptional standard of creative and performing arts at SGS, and the school as an ‘opinion former’ ‘making a difference’ in the wider community.
SGS pupils and parents will be well accustomed to the incredible array of Music, Drama, Dance and Art opportunities and the Award also recognises SGS’s collaborative work, including the Greater Manchester Poetic Declaration of Human Rights, the annual Year 5 Art Exhibition for children from local schools, and projects with Curious Minds.
Recent school productions have included ‘Wind In The Willows’, ‘The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe’ (watch a video selection of highlights from the show), ‘The Production That Doesn’t Quite Go As Well As Expected’, the Annual Dance Show, Dido and Aeneas and ‘Chicago’.
You can enjoy a wide selection of musical performances on Stockport Grammar’s YouTube channel.
SGS offers outstanding opportunities to participate in music from beginners in Junior Band to concertos in First Orchestra with a vast array of ensembles, bands, choirs and orchestras covering different musical styles and concerts in prestigious venues from the RNCM to St Mark’s Cathedral, Venice.
Art, Music and Drama are offered at GCSE and at A Level. SGS’s specialist dance teacher, along with visiting professionals, choreographs the school’s dance shows, runs dance clubs focused on different styles and classes within SGS’s PE curriculum.
Director of Drama Mr Matt King-Sayce led the process of applying for the Award: “I am very passionate about the arts and I knew when I joined SGS in 2019 that I wanted to shout about the amazing opportunities that our students can enjoy, as well as sharing our facilities with the wider community.
“Things like our Year Five Art Competition and our Arts Award work were an amazing foundation to our application, which we then strengthened through our work with local Primary Schools and elsewhere in the community.
“I am really proud that we have achieved the highest standard from Artsmark, it shows that our hard work has been worth it.”
Head of Stockport Grammar Senior School, Mrs Sarah Capewell said: “Receiving the Artsmark Platinum Award is a superb achievement and a recognition of all the incredible work that goes on within and beyond the school in terms of the Creative and Performing Arts. As one of only a small number of schools to have achieved the Platinum level of this award, it demonstrates just how rare it is and just how much Stockport Grammar School excels in this area.”
