This year it was great to have some team sports running at the Summer Reunion BBQ with football being one of them.
Four teams were pulled together with the help of a number of Old Stops and this allowed for a fabulous 5 a-side tournament on the day. The teams were made up of players from various ‘class of’ years which kept things quite entertaining! All games were played in great spirit and the teams involved seemed to have a fantastic afternoon which was illustrated by the fabulous group photo at the end.
Mark Dunnington (OS 1995), a player from Team 4, the Jolly Boys, kindly provided this update:
"Having seen the advert from External Relations calling for players we decided albeit with some concerns to enter a team into the Summer Reunion BBQ 5 a-side tournament - what could possibly go wrong?!
Having then noticed the years all the other teams had left SGS, we realised the closest team age was 20 years our junior, which caused some feverish messages between the group and the reality struck that this might be more of a ‘dads and lads’ scenario.
The first game was a baptism of fire and fortunately the opposition allowed us to play with 6 players, although this still resulted in us coming second by a number of goals. The following games then seemed to pick-up and we either progressively improved or the opposition took pity on us - with ex-Sale Sharks back row, Chris Jones, leading from the front and taking the golden boot - who knew!
The final game finished 4-4 and a penalty shootout followed which was undertaken with great seriousness but didn’t evoke any tears similar to those of Cristiano Ronaldo - just a sore back and hamstrings the following day.
A big thank you to External Relations for organising the tournament and refreshments which were well received. We’re looking forward to the same next year!"
