We would like to extend our congratulations to a member of our SGS community, current parent Professor Danielle George CBE, CEng, FIET, FRSA, FCGI, FBCS, upon her appointment in the King’s 2024 New Year Honours List.
Professor George has been awarded Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), for exceptional accomplishments in engineering through public engagement. She is an Astrophysicist, Engineer and TV Presenter and is currently a Professor of Radio Frequency Engineering and Associate Vice-President for Teaching and Learning at the University of Manchester.
“It was truly unexpected and a huge shock to open the very official looking envelope. We need young people to know that whether they’re into sports, music, fashion, flying, healthcare or improving our climate, there is a place in engineering and technology for them. Let’s celebrate engineering and all its ingeniousness!”
(Professor Danielle George)
Aside from her research and academic work, Professor George has been a vocal advocate for science communication throughout her career. She has written articles and given many interviews about the importance of science and the need to make it accessible to the general public. Furthermore, she has presented several TV documentaries on the subject of engineering and has given talks at schools and public events, with the aim of inspiring more young people, particularly girls, to pursue careers in science and engineering.
Her natural ability to explain complex scientific ideas in a simple and engaging manner, makes Professor George highly effective as a female science communicator and she is extremely passionate about broadening the understanding of the incredible opportunities available in STEM-related fields.
Professor George’s many television credentials include Search for a New Earth with Professor Stephen Hawking (BBC Two), Nation of Inventors (BBC One) and Hyper Evolution: Rise of the Robots (BBC Four). Hers is certainly a name not to be ignored in the field of science and engineering!
More information about the amazing work that Professor George is involved with can be found on her website.
