Eagle-eyed Old Stops may have spotted a familiar location in a film about football legend Sir Matt Busby.
The 2013 film Believe, follows a fictionalised version of the Manchester United legend as he helps to train a small football team to win big in a local competition. Busby’s blossoming friendship with the young boy, Georgie, helps Busby to come to terms with the devastating 1958 Munich plane crash that killed 22 people including eight players from the Manchester United team.
SGS plays a role in the film as the backdrop to the fictionalised Lancashire Grammar School for Boys. The head’s corridor and the Quad, can be seen in various shots while Georgie is waiting for his entrance exam to the boys’ school, which is at odds with his desire to play football. Other locations such as the Hallam Hall, where Georgie is due to sit his entrance exam, the sports hall and various other classrooms from across the site are also featured in the film. Needless to say the depiction of independent schools in the film is certainly not reflective of SGS and our wonderful pupils! Never would you be greeted by such a stern and surly teacher complete in cap and gown!
The cast and crew were on site for two days in September 2011. Most of the film was shot in-and-around Stockport and Manchester, with Stockport Cricket Club forming the backdrop to many scenes.
We would be delighted to hear from any Old Stops who were involved in the filming and would like to share their tales. Equally, if you have spotted SGS in any other films or TV shows then do let us know!
