Happy 20th Birthday to the Library!

Opened on 7 December 2005 by HRH The Duke of Gloucester, the Library has been the focal point for generations of Old Stopfordians.

As the story goes, in October 2001, it was confirmed that a new Library and Learning Resource Centre was to replace the Hallam Library, which was no longer suitable for a growing school. The plans for a new Library meant that the School would be able to restore the Hallam Hall to its former function at the heart of the school. The second storey above the Library was to become the new home for the Physics department, where the subject remains today.

Building work began on the Library and Physics building in mid-July and construction work was scheduled to finish in the spring of 2005. The final three days of the Summer Term had seen the transfer of some 15,000 books, 600 pupils having volunteered to form a human chain to pass boxes of books from the Hall library to their new home.

The new Library was a great success. Equipped with study areas, IT research facilities and a separate IT suite, it was available for use from the beginning of the Autumn Term 2005.

Having been the site of help, support and inspiration over the years, we want to hear from you about your fondest memories of the SGS Library. All you need to do is send your memories in through our dedicated online form - all the details and links to our Privacy Policy available when you follow the link.

You have until the end of November to share your stories - thank you for your support.
